A Caboose Takes a Ride

Caboose numberAfter 35 years, a 1917 New York Central 20 ton railroad caboose will be moved this Friday, July 28, at 9 AM from Hannibal to its new home at Sterling Heritage Park, 1294 Route 104A, Sterling, NY.

Tartaglia Railroad Services will be transporting the old caboose. This caboose was built in Oswego, NY and was used on the Hojack line between the Rochester area and Oswego. Joe and Loretta Ukleya and family have generously donated the caboose, in Caboosememory of their daughter, Marcia, to the Sterling Historical Society. Members of the Society have been working hard to facilitate the move of the caboose.

Though it had been partially destroyed in a fire in Webster, NY, the Historical Society has plans in the works to restore the caboose. A track bed has been built to store it. The caboose will be a fine addition to Sterling Heritage Park and will stand near the old railroad tower that once stood at Sterling Station. The tower was moved to Sterling Heritage Park in 2005.
