World War I

Known as the Great War unitl 1942 when we began numbering the wars, World War I began on July 28, 1914 in Europe. The United States entered the war on April 2, 1917 . The war came to an end on November 11, 1918. Nine million people died during this war. Some of them were from Sterling and Fair Haven. The George E. Ingersoll American Legion Post, No. 658 in Fair Haven was named for Sterling’s first soldier to fall in this war.
